My personal mission is to complete the Treasure Island Triathlon in San Francisco, November 2, 2002, and to raise $3900 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Like last year, I am doing this to honor my friend, Bronwyn Gerberding, who was diagnosed last year during her second pregnancy. Thankfully, she is doing amazingly well now.
In the last year that I've been involved with Team in Training, two of the Honored Patients have passed away, and I've found that a significant number of people I know have been touched in some way by these blood-related cancers. Here is the mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, WA/AK Chapter... The Washington/Alaska Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is located in Seattle, WA and is charted to serve the States of Washington and Alaska. The chapter has raised over 25 million dollars and trained thousands of athletes within Team in Training. The Society has four priority programs to help us accomplish our mission to find a cure for Leukemia, Lymphoma, Hodgkin's Disease, and Myeloma through research, education, patient services and advocacy. The Research Program supports projects throughout the world. The Patient Aid Program provides financial and emitional support to those affected by leukemia. \ The Public Education Program provides free materials and programs to the public. The Professional Education Program addresses the continuing education needs of the health care professional. The Washington/Alaska Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society currently funds researchers at the following facilities: The University of Washington Medical Center, The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and Virginia Mason Medical Center.
